5-Day Best of Tanzania Wildlife Safari
Four northern circuit parks across five days, adding Lake Manyara to the classic Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro sequence without shortening any of them.

Five days is where the northern circuit stops making compromises. The classic four day itinerary covers the three headline parks but leaves no room for anything else. Adding a fifth day lets Lake Manyara in without stealing time from the Serengeti, and it converts the return leg from a rush into a proper game viewing day.

Tarangire opens the trip with baobab country and dry season elephant herds. Two nights in the central Serengeti follow, which is the minimum that justifies the distance and allows a full day on the Seronera circuits. The Ngorongoro Crater provides the densest single day, and Lake Manyara closes with groundwater forest, escarpment and lake shore birding on a short final drive back to Arusha.

The habitat range across these five days is genuinely wide: semi-arid baobab woodland, endless short grass plains, an enclosed volcanic caldera, and spring fed forest against a Rift Valley wall. Very few safari regions in Africa offer that spread within a few hours of one another.

This is the itinerary we most often recommend to first time visitors who have a week to work with, since it leaves a spare day either side for arrival and departure without cutting into game viewing.

Planning your trip

Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 5 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.

Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.

In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, overnight Karatu

Morning departure and a full day in Tarangire on the northern river circuit, where dry season herds gather along the permanent water and baobabs define the escarpment.

Late afternoon transfer up the Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Karatu to the central Serengeti

Early departure through Lodoare Gate, across the Ngorongoro highlands with a rim viewpoint stop, then down onto the short grass plains past Oldupai Gorge.

Enter the Serengeti at Naabi Hill Gate around midday and game drive north west into the Seronera valley, arriving at camp late afternoon.

Day 3: Full day central Serengeti

A full day on the Seronera circuits with a picnic lunch in the field. The river course and kopje systems hold resident leopard and lion, and cheetah are regularly seen on the open ground between them.

Afternoon direction depends on current sightings and, in the right months, on how close the migration herds are.

Day 4: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater rim

A final morning game drive as you work east out of the park, exiting at Naabi Hill and recrossing the plains, with an optional stop at Oldupai Gorge.

Continue to the crater highlands and check in at a rim or Karatu lodge in the late afternoon, ready for an early descent.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Arusha

Descend at first light for a game drive on the crater floor covering the Lerai Forest, the swamps and the Munge stream.

Ascend before midday and drop down the escarpment to Lake Manyara for an afternoon drive through the groundwater forest and along the lake shore, then transfer back to Arusha, arriving in the evening.

Accommodation

Four nights on full board: one in Karatu, two in the central Serengeti and one on the crater rim or in Karatu again before the crater descent.

The crater rim night on day four is worth paying for if the budget allows. It shortens the descent drive to around 20 minutes, gets you onto the floor as the gates open, and gives you a caldera view from the property itself.

FAQs

How is this different from the 4-day classic?

It adds Lake Manyara and, more importantly, it separates the crater and the Serengeti exit onto different days. On the four day version those are compressed together, which makes the final day long. Here both get room.

Is five days a good length for a first safari?

It is arguably the ideal length. Long enough for four parks and two Serengeti nights, short enough to combine with Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro inside a two week trip.

Can I upgrade only some of the nights?

Yes, and it is often the smartest way to spend budget. Guests commonly upgrade the two Serengeti nights and the crater rim night while keeping Karatu mid-range, since that is where the least time is spent.

Do I need internal flights?

No, this itinerary is entirely by road and works well that way. Flying is only compelling on shorter trips where the transfer eats a disproportionate share of the days.

Will I see the big five on this trip?

Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.

Is a private vehicle included?

Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.

What should I pack for a safari?

Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.

How much should I budget for tips?

Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.

How far in advance should I book 5-Day Best of Tanzania Wildlife Safari?

For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every itinerary we publish is a starting point. Days can be added or removed, accommodation tiers changed, internal flights substituted for road transfers, and extensions to Zanzibar or the southern parks attached. Tell us the constraint and we will build around it.
