2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater Short Safari
The most efficient short safari on the northern circuit: a full day among Tarangire’s elephant herds, an overnight in Karatu, and an early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater the following morning.

This is the itinerary we recommend most often to travellers with limited time, and the reason is structural rather than scenic. Doing Tarangire and Ngorongoro as two separate day trips from Arusha means roughly nine hours of road transfer. Doing them across two days with a Karatu overnight cuts that to about five and puts you at Lodoare Gate early enough for a first light descent.

Day one covers Tarangire’s northern river circuit, where the dry season elephant concentrations and baobab woodland are found. This is a park with a distinct character from anything else on the circuit, and giving it a full day rather than a morning is what makes the pairing worthwhile.

Day two is the crater. Descending shortly after the gates open means cooler air, better light and predator activity before the day’s vehicle allocation has fully arrived on the floor. The six hour limit still applies, but an early start uses those six hours far more effectively than a late morning arrival would.

Karatu, the overnight base, sits in the coffee growing highlands about 30 to 45 minutes from the crater gate. It offers a wide range of lodges at every budget level and is significantly cheaper than staying on the crater rim itself.

Planning your trip

Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 2 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.

Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.

In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, overnight Karatu

Departure from Arusha at around 07:00 after a briefing. You reach Tarangire’s main gate mid morning and spend the full day on the northern river circuit, where dry season herds gather along the permanent water. Lunch is a picnic at a river viewpoint.

In the late afternoon you exit the park and continue west through Mto wa Mbu, climbing the Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu. Arrival at the lodge is usually around 18:00, with dinner and overnight in the highlands.

Day 2: Ngorongoro Crater floor, return to Arusha

An early breakfast and a 06:00 departure to reach Lodoare Gate as it opens. You cross the highland forest, pause at the rim viewpoint, and descend the Seneto road onto the crater floor.

Six hours on the floor covers the Lerai Forest, the swamps, the Munge stream and Ngoitokitok Springs, where you take a picnic lunch. You ascend in the mid afternoon and transfer back to Arusha, arriving around 18:30 to 19:30.

One night in Karatu on a full board basis. Our standard selections are comfortable mid-range lodges with gardens, hot water and reliable power, roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Lodoare Gate.

Upgrades are available to crater rim properties, which shorten the morning drive further and give a view directly into the caldera, and to the premium lodges in the Karatu coffee estates. Budget alternatives in the form of well run tented camps are also available.

FAQs

Why stay in Karatu rather than on the crater rim?

Cost, mainly. Karatu lodges are substantially cheaper and only 30 to 45 minutes further from the gate. Rim properties buy you a shorter morning drive and a view into the caldera, and we are happy to quote them, but the wildlife outcome is very similar.

Could I add Lake Manyara to these two days?

Not without weakening both existing days. Manyara sits on the route and is tempting, but a full day entry fee for two hours of driving is poor value. The three day trio itinerary is the correct way to include it.

Is this suitable as a first safari?

Yes, and it is a common choice for travellers combining a short safari with Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar. It delivers two genuinely different habitats and a realistic chance at all of the big five without requiring a week.

What is the single biggest limitation of a two day safari?

No Serengeti. The plains are five to six hours beyond the crater and cannot be added meaningfully in two days. If the Serengeti and the migration are your priority, start at the four day itinerary.

Will I see the big five on this trip?

Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.

Is a private vehicle included?

Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.

What should I pack for a safari?

Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.

How much should I budget for tips?

Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.

How far in advance should I book 2-Day Tarangire & Ngorongoro Crater Short Safari?

For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every itinerary we publish is a starting point. Days can be added or removed, accommodation tiers changed, internal flights substituted for road transfers, and extensions to Zanzibar or the southern parks attached. Tell us the constraint and we will build around it.
